I live in Oklahoma and I just turned 17 in October. I was caught shoplifting for the second time today [this is the first time I received a ticket though]. I stole a scarf that was originally $42 but on sale for $17.99. The cop said I would get a misdemeanor. I have a court date next week. What do I need to do? Will I have to pay a fine? Community service? Please help!

I live with my grandfather, he had to sign some papers and take me to my car. Therefore he knows. Can you tell me what may happen?

Why do you steal?

If convicted, your attitude and demeanor may affect the punishment that is meted. You may want to lay off the "it was on sale" defense.

This site has information about Oklahoma law, I do not know whether it is accurate. Theft Class: Oklahoma Laws

It was my second time. Both times caught obviously. I won't ever be doing it again. This kid I know, he has parents that are drunk 24/7 who won't get him a coat or gloves or anything. I saw the scarf and wanted to give it to him so badly. So I took it. Not a good idea. I won't say it was on sale of course. But I just don't know if that affects the punishment. I know the more its worth the more punishment, but since it wasn't worth the $42 any more I thought that maybe it would make a difference. I'm on this website for advice and a heads up for court, not to plead that "it was on sale" or anything of the sort. I will look at the website.

You will soon receive a letter from a lawfirm asking for what could be up to $500, likely about $200, for a civil penalty, this is above and beyond and criminal penalties.

Not for the civil demand described by Racer. Possibly not for the criminal court costs and probation fees. You need to get a job so you can pay this money.
i have a job already, they have just been giving me three hour shifts so the income of money is low. so you think the ticket will be about $200? what do you mean by probation?

The civil demand could be about $200. That's going to be demanded in a letter sent to you by the attorney for the store. If you don't pay, they will sue you in civil court. That will raise the amount owed quite a bit for the civil demand. It's cheaper to pay the civil demand once you get the letter instead of letting it go to civil court.

This is completely separate from the criminal charges that will be filed because you committed a crime. You will probably get put on probation, and will have to pay court costs and probation fees. Expect up to $800 for those costs. Could be less, could be more.

That's a darned expensive scarf you stole once you add up how much you are going to be paying total. If you don't like paying that much, you shouldn't have become a thief.
