Are you married?

Enlisted in the armed forces?

Currently living and supporting yourself without help?

And aren't planning on using one of the following reasons for emancipation...

  • I want to see a boyfriend/girlfriend that my parents don't allow
  • My mother/father/grandparent/teacher verbally abuses me
  • My parents are too strict
  • My parents don't let me do what I want to do
  • My parents won't forgive me since the arrest
  • My parents won't leave me alone because of my bad grades
  • I am pregnant.

In the state of Ohio, there are only two ways to become emancipated; both take parental consent, and for one of them you are not old enough yet.

1.) Legal marriage (must have parental consent, in some parts of Ohio must also have permission from the court)

2.) Enlistment in the active armed forces (must have parental consent, must be at least 17).

There are NO other means of emancipation in Ohio. None. No matter what. No matter how bad your situation at home. No matter how excellent a student you are. No matter how much more mature than your peers you think you are. No matter how good a job you have and how much money you have saved. None. Zip. Nada. Even if.

In both instances, if the marriage or the military service ends before you are 18, the emancipation is automatically revoked and you return to the care and custody of your parents. No matter what. In all circumstances. Even if.
