What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Iowa

Our son came home from school today with 2 tickets. One was for minor in possession of tobacco in which he had one cigarette in his backpack. The other was one in which a person across the street form the school took a picture of him smoking a cigarette after school and off school grounds and one week ago. They charged him with minor in posession of tobacco. The first was for $50 and the second was for $100. Would it be worth fighting these or should we just pay them?

Thanks

Fight them on what grounds exactly?

He should pay his fines.

Why would you "fight" these tickets your son warranted??
Don't you believe he should pay his fines and except responsibility for breaking the law?

I agree with the above posters. You need to teach your son accountability and this is the perfect opportunity in which to do that. HE should pay these fines.

You know, kids do stupid things. They make mistakes, no matter how well they are raised because nobody is perfect.

But I really think that if, when kids screwed up in small things, their parents didn't try to figure out how to "get them off" and instead let them face the consequences of their actions, the "Criminal Law" section of this board woudn't be as busy as it is!

Aw fry, let's face it - if folk were always going to do "the right thing", this board wouldn't exist at all....y'know? :D:eek:

Kiddo should do extra work around the house (allowance) to pay the fines.
Kiddo needs to learn the consequences of his actions.

People, seriously... think about this! If Mom/Dad make sonny-boy accept responsibility for his actions, he might be *mad* at them! He might slam a door or two, tell them he hates them, stomp around the house with a scowl on his face. He might even tell his friends what a******s they are! How is a parent to bear that sort of thing from their baby, their angel, their darling?!?! Much, much better to feign indignation at the injustice of the authorities for daring to take over their parental role and instilling some understanding how laws and rules work!

Seriously, OP - time to start parenting the boy. HE pays the fines, either by working off the money for you or by getting a JOB. Maybe if he had a bit less time on his hands, he spend the free time he has more productively.
