What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Illinois

My university sent me a $3,000 reimbursement check to my old dorm room, and I was just alerted that it was cashed by someone other than myself. I've been told to contact the police and I plan to press charges.

What can I expect? Am I going to get my money back? Is the bank liable since they cashed it without getting identification, or is the university for not sending it to the right address?

You will need to contact the police initially but that will not help you get your money back.

How long ago did this happen? You will need to contact the university and they will need to file a check fraud claim with their bank. The claim needs to state that the payee did not get benefit of the check. Once the bank reimburses them, they will pay you.

You immediately want to lay blame on someone for doing this. The blame can be placed on the criminal. I do wonder if you ever submitted a change of address to the university.

I had contacted the university and they did an investigation which is how they discovered the fraud. They told me to contact the police, but gave no further information on how to retrieve my funds. I had submitted an address change, but too late. I did not realize I had to as I live in university housing and have received a great deal of mail from them in the past.

Thank you for your help.

Since you did not change your address, then only the criminal and you are to blame, so please don't pass the buck to the bank or your school.

Call your school back and ask them if they are going to file a check fraud claim with their bank. Inform them that you are still owed the money and are seeking as quick a resolution as possible. Don't do this until you have filed the police report so you can give them the case number (their bank may ask for that).
