What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

louisiana
i am 16 yrs old I have been taking care of myself for almost 6 years now. i have held a steady job from the time i was 11 up untill 9 months ago. My dad is a rapist and my mother is a heroine addict, and i have been living with my grandparents for the last 9 months. They expect me to keep up my 11 classses, 3 of which are college classes and keep the entire house spick and span, which i do. they expect 350$ a month for rent but they wont let me get a job to pay my own way, or pay to recieve any type of medical attention. they have told me that they expect all the money i owe them for rent as soon as i turn 18, but they wont let me get a job to pay for that. I feel as though i should be emancipated under the circumstances that ive done everrything on my own for the past 5 and a half years and i can stand on my own. can they really charge me rent? I know that 350 a month isnt much, but they have custody and that dosent seem right. what can i do. am i elligable to be emancipated?

Okay. You are a minor, so you can't legally enter into a contract. So I wouldn't worry about the $350 a month if they won't let you get a job.

Other than that, no, you are not eligible for emancipation.

grandma should be looking to mom and dad for the funds necessary for your upkeep.

You, as a child, are not financially responsible for your own needs... your parents are.

Tell grandma to sue mom and dad.

Just suppose for a minute that you did become emancipated, which you won't be because you don't meet the requirements. But if you did, I guarantee you that you'd be paying more than $350 in rent, plus you'd be paying utilities, food, clothes, transportation, insurance, medical care, and all the other incidentals of life. You'd still have to go to school, and you'd still have to do all your own cleaning. On top of that, you'd have to work to pay all those bills.

If you think you've got it bad now, just think about that.
