What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? My state is Virginia. They are in PA.

How do I go about finding out if they are licensed to do business in Norfolk, VA? Google was no help so I turn to you guys.

You all have been so helpful to me in the past. I have worked hard to get my credit in the right place and I credit you all for part of that. Hubby and I are attempting to buy a house in the future and I don't want the illegal actions of a junk debt collector to ruin those chances.

American Credit Collections are harassing and threatening me on my cell phone for a debt that is not mine. I have a voice mail message telling me that they are collecting a debt for Penn Foster. I have never done business nor co-signed for anyone that has done business with them. I have another one saying that they are sending the cops out to arrest me. Also I have never received anything in the mail from them. I know this is all illegal and I am just gathering info right now for a FTC and AG complaint.

My other concern is that they may have sent something to my old address in MD (have not lived there in 4 years) and are claiming that they did mail something. I have not spoken to them on the phone and all info that I have collected on them was left on voice mail messages.

Also should I send a DV letter even though I have not received anything by mail from them? I have a partial account number (he was mumbling pretty fast) but that is all. What about the standard 30 from mailing response time?

Sorry for the book. I just thought I was done dealing with this crap.

My God! As I was typing my first post they called again! This has all been going on for the last 3 days.
This one is John Roberts saying that they are going to pass my account on to the lawyer.
Been doing some research on this company all morning and they seem to be pretty shady. But I took on NCO for reaging on my CR so this should be easy.

Also as far as recording calls. VA is a one party state but PA is all parties. Do I have to tell them if I do end up talking to them (accidentally picking up the phone type thing not on purpose) that the call is being recorded?

Ignoring something rarely makes it better.
I am not ignoring them. They have yet to send me anything in writing so I will not talk to them till they do. Then it will be in writing. I just need to know if anyone knows a link where I can find out if they are licensed in Virginia.

This is a company that is known to use illegal tactics and they are attempting to collect a debt that is not mine. They have already racked up a few violations. This is not my first rodeo. All I am doing it trying to protect the good credit that I worked hard for.

Virginia (nor Pennsylvania) require debt collector licensing.

They are trying to contact you. You are ignoring it. Why not pick up the phone, get their address and send them some mail?

This is not your first rodeo? Many rodeo clowns say that (no offense to those hard working guys & gals)

Are you calling me lazy or something? Sorry I am having to deal with this while getting ready for a deployment. So trust me I am more hard working than most. I also admit to making mistakes in the past. I was in debt a few years ago and I worked my butt off to get out of it. I have not had a debt collector call me in years. Or did you miss the whole part about the fact that this debt is not mine? You do know that happens right?

But I am not about to give these people any more info than they already have. If you took the time to do a simple search on the internet you would find out that this DC has several suits that they have yet to pay for breaking several FTC laws. So yes I am going to keep the upper hand with them.

And yes I spoke to one of them today and she refused to give me an address. All she did was hang up on me. She would not even give me an account number to reference and made no real attempt to make sure she even had the right person. All she was interested in was banking info from me.

Would you like some hay for that high horse you rode in on?

Lazy isn't the word I was looking for.

Good luck - please make sure to get all the sand out of your hair when you finally do pull your head out.
It does not seem that I am the one with the screaming case of rectal/cranial inversion here. Maybe some lessons in reading comprehension would help?

I just wanted to cover my bases before I contact them. But you would know that if you had actually read my OP.
