An unhabitable aparttment

My aparttment was broken into 8 days ago, the back sliding glass door was completely busted out. My landlord sent a maintence man to fix it but all he did was put up was a closet door and nailed to the back of the house. there is a gap about 7 inches long to where i can see the out side and tons of bugs now live in my home. i told my land lord and she said there is nothing they could do and the door would not be in for another 2 weeks!!! is there anything i can do?

You can help by getting a plastic sheet and using duct-tape to seal it against the floor and wall. This will prevent the bugs from getting in. Be part of the solution, not the problem.

2 weeks is BS , get a copy of your police report from the police when you reported the break in then after you have that call building inspections and tell them your LL has told you to wait two weeks , it doesnt take two weeks to install a sliding glass door, it can be done in one to two days even if they had to reduce the size of the opening by adding on to framing if new door is just a bit smaller. Inspections can order this to be repaired sooner , there is no excuse for LL to let it wait that long.

There might be a good reason to why the LL stated two weeks. I went to have some windows installed in a rental. It is going to take 21 days for the order! This included doors. This was at Lowes. True, installing would take a day, ordering something will take longer. Inspections can not order something if it is going to take days to order unless they deal in magic.

You have no idea if these are custom doors and or if there are contractors or a source whereby the doors can be purchased. 2 weeks to me is acceptable, may even be fast by some standards.
BTW, how can inspectors expedite the process? only thing they can do is give a deadline and place a fine.

Even with odd sizes if one looks hard enough and has to have it shipped to them or shipped to a nearby town and picked up one can often get what they need shipped out with in 3 to 5 days of ordering. door is a exterior door not a interior door, ( fire exit ) If inspections saw it as a issue to condemn over, they in theory can do just that wich would lite a fire under LLs tush to get it done faster. nailing a closet door ( hollow core door? ) up creates condition where unit can be broken into easily, maint man who nailed it up also created condition where pest or small animals could get in , even if plastic were added it can be torn through by claws. If maint were to have cut plywood and temporarily but thoroughly screwed it down to seal it that may have been another choice but thats not what was done , in the time being furnace parts can be ordered and recieved with in three to five days, same with fridge and stove parts, electrical components , No reason for two weeks on a exterior door.

Granted if one wants to go through all that trouble and ADDED EXPENSE. I sure don't. Want the LL provided here was reasonable. No inspector will condemn a place due to that. It is STILL PROTECTION FROM THE ELEMENTS. Just because the door is hollow does not CREATE a condition for a break-in. A steel door can be broken in if one wants to enter that bad. I agree that a sheet of plywood would have done better in this situation, but that could also go with the fact, that could also be broke into. Again, delivery on a item depends on the place where order is being done. I prefer Lowes, if tenant wanted it faster, as you indicated, than they should cough up the extra expense.

I agree with Atomizer, be part of the solution, take a little tape and cover that small area. I am sure they are not TONS of bug entering. This is something that you added to make situation worse than what it appears to be looking for discount rate in rent. Not going to happen. LL is doing what she can do and she has no control over receiving an item from a store.
