What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? ky

I was asked to come to court to testify about my relationship with my step child. If I am asked questions that dont pertain to the case can I refuse to answer them? I have dealt with harassment from this family for 5 years and I dont want them to know where i work and details about my children.

Posting history folks.

Ok, so who are you this time. Last time you were dad, now you're the stepmom:confused:

You cannot be forced to incriminate yourself.. you can be compelled to incriminate someone else. Some states, like CA, grant privilege to spouses.

In any case, you can get an attorney to assist you.

As Steven mentions, if your responses might tend to incriminate you in criminal activity you can invoke the Fifth Amendment. But, if you simply do not want to answer, you will likely be ordered to answer by the court. If you have an attorney hopefully he will object to any questions that do not pertain to the issue at hand.

And just WHO is "asking" you to come to court? Have you been issued a subpoena? Is this a meeting before a mediator or a court proceeding before a judge?
