What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MD

If I ask for a year’s salary for severance pay, due to numerous violations and unethical practices in the workplace will that be considered blackmail?

As in, give me a year's severance and I won't report you to the various authorities?

I believe it's actually extortion rather than blackmail.

It was my understanding that in order to be extortion (or at least the illegal kind) the threatened action must be against the law. (i.e. "pay me or I burn your store down). Making a report for alleged safety violations is not illegal.

The OP though seems to value personal gain over the safety of his co-workers.

Frankly, I don't see that it matters much whether it's extortion or blackmail. Either way, the OP is just as much scum as the employer.
