New York state
So this is a complicated question, sort of, but I'll try to ask with as much detail. Also, I'm not sure if it's in the correct forum but I tried to find something similar.
I don't know if anybody is familiar with the 3D World online game/software called Second Life, secondlife.com, but the game has a virtual currency called Lindens (L$). These Lindens cost real world currency to obtain. There's an exchange rate that changes from time to time. Usually for around $2.50 USD you can receive L$570.
Now, within the game, members can choose to create groups. There is an option when you create the group, to have your group included in the search facilities. If you choose this option, it will cost you L$30 per month.
Now, in the group settings, you can choose to require the groups members to be liable for group expenses, this includes the L$30 linden per month to be included in the search.
When a new member joins a group, there is no prior consent that a member has to agree to in order to join the group that they may be liable for a portion of the groups expenses. So without any knowledge, members of the group can obtain unwanted charges on their account for fees that they were completely unaware of. I know that we're talking about minuscule amounts of currency, but still the point remains, these members are joining these groups, and being charged group liabilities that they have never agreed to.
Is this legal? And how?
