What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NJ

my friend was at target the other day and stole some makeup, but had taken the product out of the case before leaving the store. she didn't get caught but left the discarded cases behind some of the children's toys section.
later that day my friend got busted at pathmark for shoplifting with a friend what was "$200 worth of makeup". the makeup was returned and target came to pick up some other items that had been taken (NOT the makeup). what would happen to my friend if target found the discarded cases and linked it back to her? she is a minor and it's her first offense so would there be any legal penalties? what would be the worst case scenario for her??

Legally, a ticket. Socially, a bad name and an attachment to a social worker who can do almost anything. (supervision, curfew, juvenile detention center). Not a good trade for anything, let alone make-up.

juvenile detention center? even if it's a first offense?

and would there be any sort of public record or anything? or a court hearing?

She can forget about shopping at a Target or Pathmark for a long, long time.

And yes, she may end up with serious consequences for her "first" offense (seriously - that's laughable. It's just the first time she was stupid enough to get caught).

Hopefully, her parents make HER pay the penalties and don't let her off with being grounded. The rest of us pay for her stupidity.

As for you - get new friends. Unless, of course... this "friend" is you. Then you need to sort out your life. And pay the fines. And stop stealing from the rest of us.

my "friend" is most def not me. i'm simply asking on her behalf. can you blame me for being worried?

and it really was her first offense, no quotation mark needed. it was the first and only time she's ever done this.

The friend decides to shoplift for the first time and goes for two hundred dollars worth of products?!! More likely she started off with a lipstick, and worked her way up.

When your friend turns 16 and tries to get job, she will have a tough time finding someone to hire her with the theft conviction on her record.

Tell your friend to learn how to mow lawns, deliver newspapers, or paint fences to make the money to repay the store(s), and pay for her own purchases in the future.

Did you get any of the makeup? YOu are aware of her stealing this. Wer eyou with her? Since you are aware you could be charged with being an accessory after the fact for covering for her. If I were you, I would DEFINITELY be worried.
