My daughter is with her father for the summer, and last night he called me from the emergency room saying that she had run into a parked car with her bike causing her to go through the car's windshield.

When I got to the hospital it looked like she had been put through a meat grinder. They were waiting for a platic surgeon to look at her.

The situation between her father and I is very volatile and I'm in the middle of custody issue after custody issue. I don't believe his story about her hitting the car so hard that she broke the windshield, although when I spoke to her just now on the phone she confirmed the story. She has learned to parrot what he wants her to say - her phone calls are monitored, so I don't know what to believe.

Should I be calling some authority to check out this incident?

He would not let her leave the hospital with me so that I could tend to her today, and I'm sure he is leaving town (he's an airline pilot) and she will be with her step-mother.

I reported him to CPS three years ago for beating his wife's 12 yr old son with a belt, and it has been utter hell for everyone since. I'm worried about the reprecussions from calling them again, but feel like something is very wrong about thier story. it would take an awful hard hit unless she hit it just right. I would probably investigate farther.
Did you discuss your concerns with the Dr. They are trained to spot abuse and are mandated reporters.

Depending on how fast she was going and the angle at which she and the bike hit the car, sure she can. What are you implying? What do you think might have happened?

This just happened last night. Maybe you should wait a few days before you make a custody/visitation issue out of it. Let your adrenaline settle down a little.

I would think, especially if she was wearing her helmet and hit it just right, it would not be impossible for her to go through the windshield.

things were pretty heated in the hospital room - the Dr did ask her father about the accident, but seemed more concerned with stiching up her face. She had 30 stitches, and will have permanente scarring.

I've asked her father for the Dr contact information, so will be calling him when I get that.

Also do you think the father should have let her come back to our house with me? It was 11:45 by the time I left the hospital last night. She needs to be cared for by her mother.

I guess I'm a bad mom, because my daughter was riding her bike this weekend in the evening as well.

I think you need to take a step back and think things through logically. You are thinking in an emotional way and that could cause you some problems. If this is dad's time, let him take care of his daughter.

I overheard him and his wife talking about his work schedule, I'm 99% sure he's not there and she's with her inept step-mother. I know alot of you are step-moms, and she's kind to my daughter for the most part, but she's completely clueless and negligent.

No helmet. To this day.

The kid cracking her face up and the windshield, from hitting a stationary car at young girl 'pedal power' speed is totally credible.

if it's dads time, he determines her childcare. Would I want my child with me after something like that, yes; but is it realistic in your situation- no

Call the ER and ask to talk to the Dr that treated her- you don't need dad to give you that info.

as for riding her bike at 8:30 unsupervised- my kids ride their's until dark (in the summer that is almost 9:30 here). At 8, she should know bike safety and where she can and can't go. I really don't think you need to stand over her the whole time. this could be a very valid accident.

While kiddo may have possibly run into a parked car, how fast was she going to break the WINDSHIELD of a parked car, I can see possibly cracking it but going THROUGH IT? Doubtful.

She would have had to be going 20 mph at least for the momentum of her weight to cause enough force to even just crack the windshield. Think about it, if it takes a deer getting hit by a car going 30-40 mph to just crack the windshield on most cars, a 45 lb 8 yr old is going to go through it?

I don't believe it either, granted there are freak accidents but I would be absolutely concerned.

Seniors what do you think? I would be tempted to question the doctor about the injuries.

I know you are upset, but lay off with the name calling on the step mom, I'm a step mom too ya know. Take a moment, breathe and think logically here. It's ok to be upset but before jumping to conclusions and going postal here. Really take a LOT OF TIME out and investigate all the facts before you get on dad's case here. You do not want to make a scene for no reason.
