What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? SC

8 months ago I added a computer to an existing account I had. This account has NEVER been late or over the limit. The payment was not adjusted for the added purchase, collections called and I promptly paid the balance and got online with a company representative to set the payment accordingly. They acted as if it was not their problem and were not very professional so I closed my account so that nothing else would be purchased from that company.
This company's collection just called this week and said I owed a "past due amount". It seems the payment amount that the representative set wasn't enough to cover the payment/finance charges each month! I talked to a supervisor and, in a polite way, they insinuated that is was not their problem and was mine alone. A company this financially irresponsible is costing me extra money I DO NOT HAVE!
Is their any course of action I can take? What do I need to do?

Sure - pay off the balance and be rid of them forever!

Increase your monthly payment amount. You should have seen when your balance didn't go down that you aren't even covering the interest.

I should have mentioned the payment comes out automatically from my checking for the convenience of not having to follow the paperwork. That is how I never missed a payment. Also, I do not have the money available(in this economy) to pay them off or I would.. just to get them out of my hair. The biggest problem is that they have cost me a good bit in fees by not setting a proper payment. This is a very well known large company but I don't know this forum's rules of mentioning names/companies.

As Tigi said - YOU could have seen the problem

The automatic payment is convenient, but you should know what your financial position is month to month. You should have seen your balance climbing, especially when your bookeeper was accruing your interest expense.

At the end of the day, the managing of the account is on you.
