What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

I am currently collecting unemployment but working sometimes only .25 hours in a week for an employer that has no work for me (I work based on client need). It is a huge hassle to report this and it is just so darned small (never more than 3 hours in a week).

I wondered if I contributed this money to the companies 401K plan if I had to report it.

Thanks!

Agree, it's still earnings.

Plus the fact that it's unlikely the employer would LET you contribute the full amount to your 401K. If they did, there wouldn't be any net pay from which to deduct Social Security, Medicare, and CA SDI taxes.
