What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? VA

My ex will not release my daughters belongs(chattels). I have demanded for months, with emails, letters and in person. The police wouldn't help me; actually said take him to court, they can't get involved. This is around a domestic violance case. She is not his daughter. He will not let me have her bed, tv, games, etc. This is really hurting my daughter. I have filed a civil suit, but our date to set trial is still 29 days away. Anyone know of any other way to regain possession of her belongings. She is 16 now.

You're already following the proper steps...short of hiring a few goons to break his kneecaps, what else do you want?

It appears that you are doing all that can be done at the moment.

I’m not a big champion of the brotherhood of police officers, but I don’t see that it’s fair to express any criticism of them here without knowing more of the circumstances. Nor will dwelling on the subject be of any benefit.
However, we do need to dwell on this business of your civil lawsuit.

You write, “I filed a civil suit”. Which is all that you tell us.

And when you say that YOU filed it and not “my ATTORNEY” filed it”, (meaning you filed pro se) and you don’t say in what court (hopefully one that has jurisdiction over the subject matter, which may not be so in a VA small claims court) or whether you are the principal litigant or acting as Guardian ad litem;

And you haven’t stated the grounds for the suit and the type of relief you are asking of the court, nor explained how you intend to secure and introduce evidence relevant to your claim, then that worries me.

Now if you want to talk about and provide more information on these issues upon which your civil case may rest or fail, I’d be happy to discuss them with you.
