What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Iowa My son was accused of shop lifting at a store in a mall. Police were called and my wife was called to talk to them at the store. No charged were filed with the police and he was let go. A week later we got a letter in the mail for a settlement offer. Iowa code 645.3 and or 613.16 They want us to pay 200.00 within 20 days. If we pay he will be cleared of this claim. They want a check for 200.00 at Palmer, Reifler & Associates P.A. Law office in Orlando FL. They also state if not paid there may be future civil action. It seems like a scam to me. Have you heard of this?

This is a civil demand and is not a scam. YOUR SON should pay this fine.

It's becoming quite common for stores that apprehend shoplifters to send them civil demand letters like this. Palmer Reifler is one of the biggest firms that market their services to retailers to do this sort of collection.

If you ignore them, you're rolling the dice that they won't actually file the civil action.
