I am a 21-year-old New Jersey resident attending The College of New Jersey, which is a public school.
I grew up in an abusive household and do not receive any form of support from my parents. They are unwilling to help in any way. I moved out 3 years ago.
I am unable to afford college tuition without financial aid BUT because I am still considered legally "dependent" on my parents I am required to submit their financial information (when applying for financial aid), which they refuse to provide. Thus I must prove that I am independent. I am able to legally prove that I have lived on my own for 3 years and paid all of my own expenses. I am also able to prove that I am on food stamps (under my name).
I have been dealing with the financial aid office at my school for years. When I started college before moving out of my house I went through my father's things and found his financial documents so that I could fill out the FAFSA form. Now his information is unavailable to me and they are insisting that I need some legal proof that I come from an unsafe home environment (from a psychologist, social worker or court document). In regard to the psychologist or social worker, they legally would have to have been involved during the process of my moving out. They are not allowed to write a summary of a past event. (My parents will not write a letter.)
