Hi I owe roughly about 5500 in back child support and just recently lost my job and am receiving unemployment.. Anyhow I've been paying on child support ever since I started working again so no dead beat here.. Anyhow my question is since I'm paying child support and back support am I able to go to get food stamps?

People qualify for Food Stamps based on income and asset information. Whether or not you owe past due support is not taken into consideration.

My advice:
1. go apply for food stamps. Worst thing that happens, you get turned down.

2. You can request a modification of your child support and possibly get it reduced. Factors that would affect the likelihood of getting the mod include:
-Why you are unemployed --did you quit? were you fired?
-Where you order is currently set---if you already a minimum order, then it is highly unlikely you would get it reduced even more.
-There are others, but these would be the biggies.

There is a .gov website that allows you to enter basic information and will calculate if you may be eligible. Google for it if you want it, I don't recall it and feel if you need them you can research them.. By the way, they are not called food-stamp benefits any longer, they are SNAP.
