What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA

When I filed my 2009 1040 last October (extension filing) I figured a total refund of $1,xxx, which I applied to my 2010 estimated tax. However, I just received a surprise $2,xxx refund check from IRS (no letter or explanation attached). My question is this: Did I make some mistakes in my 2009 tax forms and therefore IRS has corrected (caught) them for me and sent me an excess refund. And more important, is my initial $1,xxx is still applied to my 2010 estimated tax as I requested? In other words, is my total refund supposed to be ($1,xxx+$2,xxx) now (after correction)? Of which, $1,xxx has been applied to my 2010 estimated tax and the remaining $2,xxx mailed to me? Note: If I knew my total refund was ($1,xxx+$2,xxx), I would have applied the total amount to my 2010 estimated tax.

You could just turn around and submit the 2xxx back to them as an estimated payment.

You aren't going to get an accurate answer here. We don't know if the IRS made a mistake or not when they sent you the money.

You will need to call them. 1-800-829-1040.

And you should receive a letter in the mail, showing your submission and their corrected data, on a line by line item of what is changed.

Unexpected refund check san a letter

Is this uncommon to receive this kind of an unexpected refund without a letter attached, or am I going to receive an explanation separately? Also, how do I know if the initial $1,xxx has been applied to my 2010 estimated tax?

Geez, you were given your answer. Either wait for the IRS letter or CALL THEM. I could offer you an explanation but I can't see your tax return or their notice of adjustment on my screen. I suspect you paper filed the return which might be somewhat responsible for this, but other than that you need to talk to the people who sent you the check.

I filed papers (not e-file). I try to get some info before calling. As I mentioned, I did not receive a notice of adjustment with the check.

Received the notice today

I received the Notice (separately) today saying, "We Changed Your Estimated Total Taxes -- You are Due a Refund" ... I plan to review and compare the numbers with my original filing papers.

On the front page is is your total estimated taxes paid in. Look to the line on your 1040 where you listed the estimated taxes paid. Look to your checkbook for the dates and see if they compare to the specific dates for estimates on a later page of the notice. If the IRS is right, cash the check.

Thanks! I'll follow that.

Don't forget to account for any refund amount from two years ago taxes, that you may have rolled forward into last years estimated taxes.

and forgot to mention that the senior members of freeadvice.com invoke finders fees for any tax refunds from the IRS, all part of their stimulation program.

Gotta throw you folks some cash (well, attaboy's).

This is a great service you provide, taking a lot of your time and efforts. The posters don't always appear to appreciate everything the senior lawyers do day in and day out, but it's really a pretty remarkable and fast/free response to their concerns.

Hat's off!
