What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? FL

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? FL

I was charged with DWAI in the state of NY in 2007 while i was a nys resident. I was 19 and had my license suspended and received conditional drivers license. I was also court mandated to attend various alcohol education classes such as MADD and defensive driving, etc.

I paid all fines and attended many of these classes and also attended an out patient rehab twice a week for over about one year to maintain conditional license. Unfortunately my Father retired and moved to Florida and I had to go with him for financial reasons and never completed all classes.

The state of Florida told me they have no record of my DWAI and had no reason not to issue me a full drivers license and so they did.

I joined the united states Marine Corps in 2008 and am still active duty, stationed in North Carolina. My problem is, I drove to NY to see my fiance and family and learned from from a cop friend that my license was suspended twice and revoked in the state of NY for "failure to finish class". I was never informed of this, and to this day can not figure out what class they are talking about. I had no choice but to leave my vehicle at my mothers house and fly back to NC.

My problem is, NYS DMV and Nassau County Court doesn't understand, I am not in a position to leave the Marine Corps to attend classes 700 miles away. I am in the infantry and I am always training in various states OR deployed on combat tours for months at a time. The Marine Corps wont allow me to take off and live in NY until I can finish classes which I totally understand. But I have to be license in that state to see my family and get my car back.

Can anyone please give me advice on what I can do to fix this mess I'm in

What am I supposed to do? DMV wont give me information and honestly dont this they know what I am supposed to do.

You should definitely look into speaking to a NY attorney. It might be possible to do online classes. It might be possible to pay a fine instead for non completion of program. I haven't pulled up your state requirements yet, but I do know in my case all those classes ordered were in leiu of the fine and jail time.

Eta: not to knock your friend, but have you checked with the court directly in addition to getting a printout of your DMV record.

Thank you isis

After doing the run around with nysdmv, I contacted NYS Veterans Association. The gentleman I spoke with told me that I, and I quote, "defaulted" a court order and need to contact the court house I was charged in(Nassau County Court, Hempstead NY). So I did this and spoke with a clerk there and she didn't understand or maby didn't care that I'm not in a position to physically attend classes in NYS because of my Government job. But she did suggest doing what you told me. She said to contact the attorney who handled my case and find what class is unfinished and get reinstated... I will try and take care of this over the next few days. I will post a follow up report on what happens. Thank you again! semper fi

Very surprised you were able to enlist. Oh well, you lucked out, good luck! Oh yea, gov't folks don't care if you are active military. They never spilled 1 oz of blood for our country & dont care about those who did

OP you stated you didn't finish your classes and now you dont know which classes you need to complete, that doesn't make sense. The DMV is the party you need to talk to to reinstate your DL, call them and find out what it takes to get this done. You should be able to take classes in NC to satisfy those requirements as long as the classes meet the correct alcohol certifications.

Why don't you send this to John McCain or any of thousands of other government employees that are veterans? In a neighboring town, the former mayor was not only a vet but a POW in Viet Nam.

and to Coast Guard not counting? Why don't you tell that to all the CG vets that spent time in the Persian Gulf for the military actions in Iraq?

Why don't you get your head out of your ass?
