Hello.. I recently had a bad toothache to where I went to the dentist and was givin an antibiotic.. Well it never got any better only worse thru the week following so it turned into an absest tooth.. I called my dentist n she said it was a very stong medicine.. So eventually I had to go to the er cause the swelling was starting to close my air passage.. When the er doc asked me what I was taking he asked why would she give me that.. The antibiotic she gave me was for anything chest down.. The same antibiotic that is used for anthrax n not for dental problems.. Can she be held liable for my er bills considering she gave me the wrong medicine.. She actually told me it will get better over time.. But the medicine I was givin at the er worked in 2 days.. Is that considered malpractice?

The anti-biotic would not have caused swelling in "your air passage" unless you were allergic to it. Even if it had, what were the damages? NOTHING

The OP did not claim that the antibiotic caused the swelling.

The OP stated that because of the inefficacy of the prescribed medication, the abscess progressed to the point that it impaired her airway.

The all caps shouting at the end of your post was unnecessary, especially considering that you misread the original post.

the best way to get the right antibiotic is do do a culture, if possible. That takes time, so a doctor uses their best judgment as to what will help the problem.

The truth of the matter is that if a tooth is infected, unless the tooth is treated, one is only treating the symptoms, not the cause.

So I would have to question why the tooth wasn't treated, to relieve the cause of the problem and let the area heal.

The infection has to be killed (~10 days on antibiotics) before the work can be done.

Sorry to inform you, but many teeth with abcesses have treatment started immediately.

As to killing the infection with antibiotics, that will never happen as long as what is causing the infection is still present. So an infected tooth, that doesn't have the decay removed and treated will never have the infection killed.

Do you have an allergy to any other antibiotic? I ask this because your answer may be the reason you were prescribed (I assume) a quinilone rather than something else.

The antibiotic you describe is still a broad spectrum antibiotic (simply stated: kills many different bacteria). Although it is true that it is used to treat Antrax, stating it is used only for "anything chest down" was ridiculous.

IMHO, not malpractice....not even close.

ETA: Well, DUH! I just noticed the date of the original post. Where's the coffee?
