Im a patient that recently visited one of the labcorp locations in Saint Augustine, Florida.

I came in to get some bloodwork for my pregnancy and I usually get it done at the hospital. This past Wednesday (2/2/11) I decided to go to labcorp to get my gestational diabetes test done.

When I walked in there was a man at the counter talking to who I find out later is the supervisor. I stood there for at least 5 minutes waiting for their meaningless discussion to end, without even being acknoledged or greeted. When the lady (supervisor) was finally finished complaining about how much she hated her job and how much work she has to do, she finally looked at me and asked if I was going to "bother to sign in".

I was immediately offended because I was trying not to interrupt and be patient even though I had many things to do that day. When she finally called me up to the counter she was very rude, asked what I needed to have done, and explained that it was going to take at least an hour and a half to get this done. Which I already knew, and had no problem with.

Besides the supervisor, there was only one other woman on duty and she is the one that took my blood and gave me the drink and told me I needed to have my blood drawn again at 2:25.

I asked if I could leave to go get my registration renewed real quick, and she said that was fine as long as I wasnt driving because I may get sick. When I got back, I was 8 minutes late and the lady who took my blood said that they couldnt finish the test because I was 20 minutes late. I immediately corrected her and asked her to look at my paperwork because I was only about 8 minutes late and I really needed to get this done.

As I am talking to this lady, the supervisor (who I had a problem with initially) began to yell at me across the office. She was in a room with a patient in one hand and a needle in the other, yelling at me. I couldn't believe how unprofessional and rude this lady was towards me and how uncomfortable that man in the chair looked.

To avoid any further attack I just left. I came back the next day to finish, only because they never gave me my paperwork back and hoping she would be in a better mood. When I came in, the supervisor was at the counter again and I immediately signed in and reminded her who I was and what I needed done.

She became competely rude and loud all over again, and telling me that I could have it done but I wasnt allowed to leave and that it was a very time sensitive process. When I told her that I planned on going to pick up my son from school and coming right back within 30 minutes she became louder and told me to "just leave then, because I just won't do your labwork".

I couldnt believe that she was treating me this way, I gave her no reason to treat me like that. She could have simply explained that it was policy and I was misinformed teh day before if that was the case.

I immediately stopped her from yelling at me in front of all of her other customers and my 3 year old daughter and asked her to just get started and do what she needed to do so I could leave. When I sat down, I began talking to my fiance and said that I thought she was having a bad day the day before, but apparently she is just a mean and rude person altogether. She obviously was listening in on the conversation because she immediately yelled out from behind the desk and across the office to say "No, I'm not having a bad day, im just tired of dealing with rude and obnoxious customers"

I couldnt believe that she was accusing me of being rude and obnoxious when I was as polite and mature as possible throughout the entire process. I didnt even give her any reason to continue her rant in front of all those customers, but she did. Stating "Im pregnant too, honey" and "If you have a problem you can take your work elsewhere". Instead of arguing with this supervisor, I simply told my fiance that I wanted the number to corporate so I could report this.

Once the supervisor called me back to draw my blood and give me the drink she immediately changed her attitude, im assuming it is because she was listening in on my conversation again and worried that I would report how she treated me. She was talking about how she has a 6mth at home and now five months pregnant, and trying to make small talk and make me feel guilty for wanting to file a complaint.

I honestly just didnt want to talk to her, and I was so upset that I just ignored her as she drew my blood. When it came to taking the needle out of my vein, I know for a fact that she intentionally pulled it out incorrectly. Ive never had issues before, and my mother used to be a nurse so I know how its supposed to be done. She didnt pull straight out, she lifted the needle at about 45 degrees and yanked it out!

She didnt say another word to me, just handed me the drink and told me that I had five minutes to drink it. I did, and I timed myself because she was so angry that she didnt even bother telling me what time I need to have my blood drawn again or anything. I sat back in the waiting room and I was so humiliated and upset that she was yelling at me like that in front of everyone, and intentionally hurt me like that.

Im assuming it was intentional because of the events leading up to it, the fact that she used to be a regional supervisor, and I would hope that she knew how to properly draw blood from a patient, and the sny smirk she gave me when she left the room.

The whole hour in the waiting room was brutal, I felt so sick to my stomach, a lot more than the first time I took the drink and it was probably because I was getting so upset and trying not to cry in front of all those people and my daughter.

I wasnt surprised that an hour and 5 minutes passed without being aknowledged in such a "time sensitive" process. I had to walk up to the counter and remind them that I needed to get my blood drawn so I didnt have to do this for the third time. The supervisor was no where to be seen, and that poor lady was left with all of those customers on her own.

She was completely frazzled and couldnt find a vein to draw from and bruised up my arm pretty good trying to find it. She apologized for her supervisor's "nasty attitude" and told me that I didnt deserve that treatment and she was sorry that I had to go through that especially being over 8 months pregnant. She also explained that this was her personality, and that this wouldnt be her first time getting in trouble and thats why she was demoted.

By the time my blood was drawn, it was 13 minutes late. So hopefully my results are accurate because this supervisor put me through a whole lot only to do the same thing she yelled at me the day before about.

I was not surprised that the one spot this supervisor put her needle in bruised up and hurt a lot more than my right arm where it was poked at least 5 times and dug into. I have pictures of both my arms to prove it, because my mother is a detective here and I know all about how important it is to document everything.

I am very upset about all of this, and will probably never go back to this office. I was a full-paying customer who could have easily taken my business elsewhere. And instead of being treated with respect and as a customer should be, I was attacked, hurt, and humiliated for no reason.

What should I do? Please help.

You should take your business elsewhere in the future if you do not like the service you received.

You should write a letter to the president of Labcorp if it will help you feel better.

You have no legal recourse (last I heard, being a little bit surly is not a crime). You have no damages.

BTW, if I were running the testing lab and you were late coming back the first time, I wouldn't let you leave the second time either. These test are time sensitive. Coming in late for the followup after the drink invalidates the results. They cannot be used for diagnosis, so the test must be repeated.

In that instance, the fault was yours for not being prompt.

Thats it?

I can handle being rude to, im a grown woman. But intentionally hurting a pregnant patient isnt wrong?!? My arms are completely bruised, shall I just wait to a blood clot hits an artery before I take action?

Can you prove it was intentional? Didn't think so.

And even if it was intentional, all you suffered is a little bruising. Bruising is a known risk of a blood draw. Nothing actionable there.

Time Sensitive?

I completely understand that. This was never told to me initially, but thats fine. That was simply miscommunication on their part and my fault for being late. But knowing that I just took this test the day prior and completely stressing the time sensitivity the second time, and not even doing it on time the second? They were twice as late getting my blood the second time. That is not my fault. They put me through all that for absolutely nothing.

Ive never bruised before from bloodwork, and of course I can't prove it except having my daughter and fiance in the room to witness it. That explains the sny smirk, she knew what she did and apparently knew I couldnt do anything about it.

"Ive never bruised before from bloodwork, and of course I can't prove it except having my daughter and fiance in the room to witness it."

I give blood regularly and never bruised from doing this. However, the last time I did this, not only was I a difficult stick, I ended up with an impressive hematoma.

Did I think the lab person did this deliberately? No.

Crap happens sometimes. I got over it.

It may seem to you that you went through a lot but there is really no
case - no legal recourse. You didn't suffer any damages from what you
posted.

If they took arterial instead of venous blood, then you possibly would have a problem.

Bruising after venipuncture, especially several sticks in one day, is not unheard of.

I asked if I could leave to go get my registration renewed real quick, and she said that was fine as long as I wasnt driving because I may get sick.
When I told her that I planned on going to pick up my son from school ...
So, did you drive? IMHO, you should not have been permitted to leave the facility after drinking the glucose. That is the reason you are instructed to bring a book and a bottle of water.

The whole hour in the waiting room was brutal, I felt so sick to my stomach, a lot more than the first time I took the drink and it was probably because I was getting so upset and trying not to cry in front of all those people and my daughter.
OR...you could have been having one of the normal reactions of drinking the glucose on an empty stomach....OR...your blood sugar may have dropped and caused the symptoms. Once again, a reason you are asked not to drive or leave the facility during the duration of the test.

I have my blood drawn pretty regularly...

I bruise just about 50% of the time. Big, ugly bruises.

I give myself injections. About 30% of the time, I end up with a huge bruise on my leg.

I get over it, although sometimes I think I should sue myself.
