If a minor is suspected by school administrators of consuming drugs on a school trip, is it legal for the school administration to force the minor to take a lie detector test?

Nobody can be forced to take a lie detector test period!

What reason would be used to refuse the test?
Simply say, "No."

Depending on the laws in your un-named state they might be able to report the child to the police and the police might be able to compel a chemical test, but that would depend on whether or not the minor was exhibiting signs and symptoms at the time and the laws of your particular state.

The state is California, and there is no cause for the suspicion other than some rumors from other students

No. And lie detector tests would be admissible in any court of law.
Not true (even if you meant inadmissible). You are answering without knowing the state OP is in, and -- in some states -- lie detector test results are admissible under certain, strictly defined conditions.

Yes I meant inadmissible. And in California, only admissible if all of the parties agree.

In no state can anyone be forced to take a polygraph test.

However, Mr. Pb, you were GUESSING prior to knowing the state.

Who would be administering the lie detector test? The school administrator?

The police aren't going to do it based merely on a hunch or because some rumors are floating around.
