What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?
Michigan
Can a real estate tax appraiser go inside my home? Can he ask me about number of bathrooms, number of bedrooms, etc?

he cannot go into your home without your approval or a court order. He can ask you about your home. Whether you answer or not is up to you.

Let me guess what it going on.

You altered your home without permits and the tax appraiser suspects that. He wants to verify the facts. You don't want him to catch you.

If he has probable cause to believe his suspicions are true, a warrant can be issued to allow an inspection of your home.

am I close?

I was referring to OHWarrier's MIL's line to keep out the tax appraiser, that she doesn't let a man in the house when her hubby's not home.
She could still make it work.

She doesn't let a woman in the house when her hubby is home. :D
