What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Florida

Hi everyone:

I got married to a German citizen in Miami in 2001 and we got divorced today in Germany. We have a 3 year old daughter in common and I would like to know what I need to do in order to have the divorce acknowledged in Florida. I did not travel to Germany because I was represented by a lawyer over there and we had settled everything in advance, so we were not fighting over anything. The divorce certificate will be issued within 2 weeks and it will be in German.

As far as child support is concerned, we also had an agreement, but I don't know whether they will want to know about that here in Florida. My daughter lives in Germany with her Mom. In any case, I don't have any child support issues and send money to my daughter every month.

Any advise will be appreciated. I tried calling the court today, but they only provide telephone advise until noon.

The US recognizes all legal foreign divorces. You do not have to do anything special for your divorce to be recognized in the US.

So I'm in a similar situation now, and I'm really happy to finall see someone else who has been through this.

We are having the divorce soon in Germany. We were originally married little less than 3 years ago in Florida.

When you say, you don't have to do anything special... do you mean you have to do nothing? I only ask because for me it would be great to be recognized as divorce in florida too! therefore if I want to remarry, I can say that I'm divorced! or when I apply for residency in another country, I can say that I'm divorced.

Am i making this too complicated? If if I am divorced in Germany, does that mean I'm divorced in florida too? If I get re-married will the divorce in Germany simply be enough to prove that I am no longer married?

also, can anyone advise me on what necessary paper work to have after this is all done?

Thanks a lot,

Josh
