You could certainly cause problems by cutting off the electricity

You can call the electric company and tell them to take it out of your name.As a LL we have had to do this when a tenant has called and said they are moving, the electricity reverts back to us due to a an agreement we have with them. Once in a while the tenant does NOT move so we are forced to do this.

The electric company does not turn it off immediately...they send the occupant a notice that in ten days the electricity will be turned off, and to prevent an interruption of service, the occupant can make arrangements to put it in their name. I would do this for all the utilities. Good luck.

This might still cause problems.

If one of the people has already filed for divorce, there is an automatic injunction that prevents the parties from moving money around, hiding assets, canceling insurance policies, etc. It would probably cover trying to put utilities in the other person's name, as well.

OP, has anyone filed for divorce yet?

If there are young kids living there, that would be wrong to cut off the utilities.
thats my only dilema.i wouldve already done it if it wasnt for our son,but i figured i would be protecting my self and he could come stay with me while it was off anyway.i think it should be his responsibility.i dunno well see what happens.probably gonna end up screwed either way:(

Sweetie - the junior high portion of that post is part of the member's signature! Most members have quotes, comments, jokes, etc. as part of their signature. It is not directed at you personally.

As for me, I absolutely love that line! Somewhat similar to the "Your village called - their idiot is missing" fridge magnet that I have...
