What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA

Hello,
I am in process of divorce for over 2 years now. My stbx has 2 different 401K accounts. (around $8500 and around $100,000)
We have been married for nearly 11 years.
My attorney sent me the letter stated
" Qualified Domestice Relations Orders will need to be prepared by outside counsel at a cost of approximately $600 per QDRO"

Is this cost reasonable ?
Does it mean my attorney can't handle QDRO and she asks a specialist outside?

If somebody knows average cost for QDRO or somebody has done QDRO, please give me ideas or any advices will be appreciated a lot.

Thank you very much for your time and help. What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

That sounds reasonable to me. QDROs can be a real pain to prepare. I would assume that your attorney intends to farm them out to someone, but do clarify that with your attorney.

I agree. $600 to prepare a QDRO is not the least bit out of line. From the way it's worded, it sounds like the attorney is having someone else draft it - which is definitely a good thing. Not that many attorneys can do this properly.

Oh, and btw, many people use '401K' to mean either a 401K or an IRA or other retirement fund. If they are, in fact, IRAs, then it might make sense to roll them together before splitting them - both to save $600 in QDRO fees and to reduce the hassle of monitoring 2 accounts.
