I live in Arizona, I got married 5 yrs ago. Shortly after the ceremony I found out the guy who married us was not a legally ordained minister. I spoke to someone in the clerks office who said no it would not be a legal marriage and assumed that was all I needed. I want the marriage dissolved and now the clerks are telling me that it will require legal action to do that. Was it even legal in the first place?? I'm so confused.

From: http://www.azleg.gov/FormatDocument.asp?inDoc=/ars/25/00124.htm&Title=25&DocType=ARS

25-124. Persons authorized to perform marriage ceremony; definition

A. The following are authorized to solemnize marriages between persons who are authorized to marry:

1. Duly licensed or ordained clergymen.

...

B. For the purposes of this section, "licensed or ordained clergymen" includes ministers, elders or other persons who by the customs, rules and regulations of a religious society or sect are authorized or permitted to solemnize marriages or to officiate at marriage ceremonies.
So, was the person authorized by the religious "society or sect" to perform marriage?

If you got a marriage license and the marriage certificate was turned in to the state after the service, then you do need to disolve the marriage. It will take legal action.
