I need help my son has been implicated in a larceny case by someone that has already been charged in the same case.
The police want me to bring him in to "provide a statement before charges are filed". should I do this? or should I wait for charges to be filed and have him turn himself into the courthouse so that he is provided a lawyer before the police talk to him? he is 17 and was in trouble three years ago for an assult that took place at school. I cannot aford a lawyer for him.

I would suggest that you arrange an appointment with an attorney. Many attorneys will provide an initial consultation for free or for low cost. If he is charged with something, you will definitely want an attorney, although he can ask for a public defender at that point.

But I would immediately meet with an attorney who will tell you in very clear terms what your son can and can not do and what questions (if any) he has to answer.
