I'm having some issues with my husband and I'm not sure where I stand legally. We gave away all of my bedroom furniture when we got married and moved in the furniture he had prior to the marriage. Here we are 6 weeks later and he's moved out and wants his furniture. I told him to give me at least 24 hours notice but I'm not going to have anything left when he takes it. And he keeps pushing that I have to let him get it whenever he wants. He doesn't have a key to my house and has been staying with his mom since Friday night. No papers have been filed. I've tried searching online for the laws pertaining to this but can't seem to find any.

Assuming you live in the US, he has every right to his furniture.

I thought they said love was a many splendered thing. 6 weeks!!! I can't imagine he has acquired much of an interest in the house if she owned it two months ago. I would think the same applies to the furniture.

Read the original post. It was his furniture before the marriage. Look up 'separate property'. OP has absolutely no claim to the furniture and needs to let him have it. She'll have to sleep on the floor until she can replace it.

Also, Craig's list has some awesome furniture buys! I bought a complete Ethan Allen solid maple contemporary bedroom set (used our own mattress, though) for only $500. And a Henredon "goatskin" asian-inspired dining set with buffet for only $450. Both nearly immaculate. Lesser quality stuff can be had almost for free.

Of course, there's Ikea for non-pricey stuff.

There is a lesson to be learned here. Don't let your new spouse or significant other give away your furniture. Put it in storage in case you ever need it again.

You know, sometimes, it's already old stuff that would cost less to just replace, if need be, with a used set than pay to store. Depending upon the quality, sell the old stuff and invest the money into a seperate account, then rebuy IF one needs, using the same money.
