I submitted a request to my universities registrar office to request a drop for an academic semester that I did extremely poorly in. During that semester I had extreme emotional, mental and physical stress which culminated in me performing poorly. Today, I received this email:

"I regret to inform you that your request has been denied. During the review process the Committee appreciated that your Academic progress has greatly improved since your first term, but found no grounds to approve your request to withdraw from the term. Late Term withdrawals are not given lightly and must have accompanying documentation that supports the request. It is a student responsibility to be aware of their performance during a term, and to withdraw within the time frame dictated by the Academic Calendar."

I feel that this is a punitive action because I did not seek out medical attention during this time.

Any advice on how to appeal this denied request would be greatly appreciated.

If you need any further information please PM me.

Thanks,
Drew

It is not illegal that they made an adverse determination. If you did not seek help earlier, it is indicative that you were not as academically compromised.

Perhaps when you are failing all of your classes and the withdrawal deadline is approaching would be a clue that you need some help?

I think you need to look at this from the view of the university.

If they accept your request, and allow you to drop an entire semester because you were performing poorly, but you have NO documentation as to a medical, psychological, or traumatic family emergency - then what is to stop EVERY student from dropping at any time, when the semester gets rough?

You have two options - work your hardest to get out of your slump, or seek documentation NOW and resubmit. The university did not punish you - you missed the deadline, you had no documentation, and they are not required to pretend the semester didn't exist because that's what you want. There are other students who are facing adversity, who do not drop, and who work past it. It makes them better people.
