What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Ohio
My son's truck was reported stolen a couple of months ago. We called towing companies, sheriff's department and other law officials and no one knew anything. A few weeks ago, he received a bill from a towing company, one of the companies that we called. They wanted $400 or they were going to keep the truck and scrap it. It was reported stolen and there is a report on it. Now since they were called and the law officials were called, is it legal for them to charge him to get it back, when they had it all this time and knew it was reported stolen?

Why do you beleive that you do not owe the tow bill , because the police didn't contact you first?

Perhaps they did try and contact you but were unable to , so why do you think that the tow Co. should not be paid?

well, the argument is because no action by the OP caused the tow bill to be incurred. It was that of the thief that caused the debt so the thief is who is liable.

While it usually doesn't work that way, that is actually why the OP is not liable for the bill.

This towing company was called when we first found it was missing and they said they did not have it. Isn't it common practice to locate the person from the tags on the vehicle or at least look to see if it has been reported missing? Is it not possible that they hold on to it for a period of time to rack up dollars in fees so they can keep it? If it can be proven that they were called and they lied, is that not wrong?
