It IS possible for a civil judgment to result in jail time, though (Child Support).

You forgot alimony. If this case is a civil matter and alimony is a civil matter, WHY doesn't contempt of both result in jail time?

The fact is that statute allows for non-payment of child support to result in jail time in every state AFAIK. There is no such statute regarding non-payment of small claims judgments (at least not in states that I'm familiar with).

Alimony? I'm not sure if statute covers that or if it requires a contempt of court charge. Probably depends on the state.

Bottom line: If someone refuses to pay alimony, they can land up in jail, if someone refuses to pay a court ordered judgement they need not worry about jail. What's wrong with this picture?

Yes of course you are right, more and more women are becoming victims of a system originally designed to force men to pay women. Hence the beginning of massive alimony reforms starting to sweep the country.

We've come a long way since the USSC declared the Alabama alimony laws unconstitutional (only men and not women can be ordered to pay alimony)

We are watching historical changes being made.
