What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NJ

My best friends at Home | NJ Alimony Reform sent me an email advising that a discussion will be featured tonight on Anderson Cooper. The episode is titled "Man-i-mony Should women pay alimony to their ex-husbands." As many of our regulars here know, I am against permanent alimony whether it is paid by a man or a woman. Although I do agree that there may be the odd exception here and there.

NJ Alimony Reform had a very minor part in this segment and so might not even be included, however for those us against permanent alimony, I feel that it's important to view, listen, and post comments about the ongoing movement to overturn permanent alimony rulings. We all need to do this regardless of our home state. It will contribute to the movement that started with MA, continued to FL and hopefully will continue to your state too....

Their question is obviously sensationalistic.

Whether alimony is permanent or temporary, punitive or rehabilitative, short term or long term, the laws are very clear in every state that I know of (including NJ). If a woman would have received alimony from a man with a given set of circumstances, then the man should receive alimony from the woman if the circumstances are reversed.

"Should women pay alimony to their ex-husbands?" is a silly question.

No it is not a silly question, it should be asked of every sitting divorce court judge.

It is silly to pose the question as if there could be one blanket answer that would apply in all situations, or as if gender should have anything to do with it.

I happen to believe that there are judges out there who don't believe in ordering a woman to pay alimony in any situations. And they have the discretion to do so.

What you believe is quite irrelevent and not usually based in reality. And depending on the state and how the statutes are worded, there are definitely limits to judicial discretion. But you never let a silly little thing like facts get in the way of your personal misogynistic quest.

It really doesn't matter. What does matter is that the topic keeps getting air time. There are many folks out there that are completely unaware that women pay alimony. There is a persistent misconception that alimony is relative to a successful middle aged man, now abandoning the woman who worked as a waitress to help him get though school for a young chickie. And of course, the waitress is unable to maintain a similar home environment for the children. Thus, yes, you will have many people watch simply due to the name of the episode. I don't care. What I do care about is some current realities getting publicized.

Have a nice day all!

Thanks tuffbrk, you have a nice day too!

I'm going to be thinking of a song for the band to play when the alimony ship hits the iceberg and is on its way to the bottom of the ocean.
