What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? any/all

I have general question about voluntary termination of parental rights.

In a discussion with a friend of mine, I have argued that I doubted anywhere would voluntary TPR just because a parent asks for it when there is no other person waiting to adopt (even if the remaining parent supported the TPR).

Does that sound correct? Does anyone know of a state where someone can voluntarily terminate their rights just because they don't want to be a parent to that child and the court will allow it even though it will leave the child with only one legal parent?

You are incorrect.

(And no - I'm not doing the hard part for you ;) )

Not off the top of my head, but feel free to Google the voluntary termination of parental rights for each of the 50 states.

I don't mind to do the legwork to find where will do it, it just seemed silly to look for if it didn't even exist anywhere, so thanks!

I'd never know if I just hadn't looked hard enough or if it didn't exist.

Of course if someone happens to already know offhand where would do it, that would be great to know, but I don't expect anyone to do the searching for me.

Search the forums.

There is one Rather Large state where if both parents agree, and provided the remaining parent can satisfy the court's requirement that (barring catastrophe) they themselves can support the child without State aid, a VTPR of the other parent can occur.

Now there aren't many states which WILL allow this. But it's simply not accurate to state (not that you have - but it's been stated as fact here with stunning frequency) that NO state will allow a VTPR outside of a stepparent adoption.
