Probation with random testing doesn't work well for alcohol as it purges from the system too closely. And, unfortunately, jail is not much o fa deterrent for an addict - be it alcohol or drugs.

The 12-step programs do work to varying degrees. While there are individual programs that have very high success rates, these are often hard to get in to or prohibitively expensive. And most of those programs utilize a form of the 12-step methods anyway.

Day 5 is great! Just remember - one day at a time! And, remember the third tradition!

Traditional laboratory methods detect the actual alcohol in the body, which reflects current use within the past few hours (depending on how much is consumed). The presence of EtG in urine indicates that ethanol was ingested within the previous 3 to 4 days, or approximately 80 hours after ethanol is eliminated from the body. Therefore, EtG is a more accurate indicator of the recent injection of alcohol than measuring for the presence of ethanol itself.

And how many probation offices use this EtG method? The cost for laboratory confirmation is rather high, and the reliability is under some scrutiny.

But, again, the deterrent effect of jail is minimal. The only way to solve the problem is to come to grips with it. Experience and research shows that the threat of jail has only a temporary impact, not a long term one. And since you can't put someone on probation forever, and you can't afford to test them each and every week, such a threat would not be effective.

Thanks a lot java!!! Yes that is why I think 12 steps are the corner stone for anyone who needs help. No matter what recovery program you find I promise you that you will find utilization of the 12 steps (god, helping others, apologizing, forgiveness etc....). I am expecting jail time and do worry about having control over drugs as I heard that there is a lot of that in there**************. Woody, I do agree that would be a good incentive to stay clean, but guess what happens after you finish probation you were forced into**************. Sometimes you have to be unwillingly forced and hopefully you start to do it for yourself in the process.

OP, seriously, i wish you luck. mine was a hard lesson. the fact that i didn't kill anyone or myself is an amazement to me. i slammed into 3 PARKED cars. to this day...i don't know how i got off the freeway and ended up on the street. that was over 7 years ago. i take cabs, walk....or i just don't drink in public. don't test fate.

Thanks for all the support Isis.....I am prepared to have the books thrown at me and am fully ready to accept what I have done. I'm glad you can do what you do. My problem is that when I use I hermit. When I hermit and I'm intoxicated I want to go out. What is an idiot hermit going to do? Exactly what I have done. On top of that I know that I have a problem and was always on the fringe about it. Without a support system for me I will have this happen again, I know I will.
