I live in a side by side duplex. When we signed a lease 6 years ago, the lease said no pets. We questioned the landlord about the "no pets" because the tenant on the other side of the duplex had a chocolate Labador Retreiver. The landlord said that when the other tenant leaves there will be no more animals in that half of the duplex either. (he was grandfathered in).
When the other tenant moved and the landlord rented the other half of duplex, they had a dog and a cat. That was about 4 years ago. So, I got two purebred cats (siameese type) . The cats are inside only cats. After 1 year or two of not hearing anything from the landlord, my daughter wanted a dog. We purchased a very expensive Olde English Bulldogge and she is 10 month now. We just received a notice from the landlord that he is going to charge us $50.00 per pet per month. We went to the other tenant and she is not getting charged anything for pets. Does the landlord have the right to charge us and not the other tenant? My pets are well cared for and do not destroy any of his property. We clean up the yard from the dog. The dog does not go outside without being on a leash. We are taking the dog to be a service dog training. Good dog Would hate to move or get rid of the dog.

You agreed to the "no pets" policy upon moving in. Now you want to change those terms. It's right that you'd have to pay for the privilege. You could always move out. Or the LL could have evicted you for violating the "not pets" clause.

your lease and lease terms have nothing to do with your neighbors, and theirs has nothing to do with you.

it cant be news to you that life isn't fair. landlords do not have to be fair in enforcing leases. its their property, its their conditions, and there is no law that says they have to have the same conditions for everybody on their property. '


its not really that much to get your head around. just move at the end of your term, and hope landlord doesn't evict you sooner.

I think I should have a pet unicorn.

Life isn't fair. There is no law that requires the landlord to allow/disallow pets (pets, not service animals) equally accross all his units.

Your landlord is under no legal obligation to have to explain any of this to you.

You indicate the dog you purchased is 10 months old; still a puppy by any standards. Puppies can be very destructive and some landlords (myself) are hesitant to accept pups but may accept older dogs.
