What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA
Hi,
I have been getting spurious collection calls from Southwest Credit Systems, claiming that I owe $65 for AT&T mobility bill for phone number 650 417 8080. I never own that number. I dropped by AT&T store and they checked my record- I was clean and paid up on my AT&T bill.

They have my address and phone number and last 4 digits of my SSN.
They said I have to file a police report else they will keep calling. So should I file a police report?
Thanks.
David

I'd do two things:

1. Send them the DV letter (you can google that) as well as a seperate letter telling them to stop calling you. Send both certified w/return receipt.

2. Keep an eye on your credit report.

3. Go to www.att.gov/complaints and fill out the online complaint form. This will take a couple of months, but it will be routed to someone in AT&T's corporate legal department who can straighten things out.

Thanks FlyingRon.
Do you have a law practice in California near San Francisco Area ?
I may need legal help if this goes out of hand - such as Identity theft.

With scant exception we are not lawyers here. We also can not make legal referrals. Find a lawyer links are scattered all through this site.

I'm not sure how a lawyer is going to help you with identity theft. Your number one thing is to keep an eye on your credit and accounts. Most likely in this case, some dumbass collection slimeball has tagged the file with your real information thinking he's found who he's looking for.

I am not even sure its an identity theft problem. The debt alledgedly comes from att, att told the guy that his name/SSN were clear with them. Therefore it obviously didn't come from att...my guess is its some sort of error on the part of the collection agency.
