Well, shoot. That was supposed to be a lot harder.

I might have to break out a Vigenere cipher.
I don't know about harder but here is one I think is more fun.

You have a set of encyclopedia on the shelf (yes, they used to actually print all of that stuff in books. Lots of families used to spend a lot of money to buy a set for the home). There 12 volumes total. Each cover (front or back) is 1/8" thick. Each volume contains 500 pages (no additional unnumbered pages). Each volume, exclusive of the covers is 1" thick. They are in chronological order on the shelf.

question:

If a bookworm starts chewing at page of of volume 1 and chews to page 500 of volume 12, how far has he traveled?

14-3/4" (or one foot, two and 3/4 inches)

??

as heard on "Let's Make a Deal" using a muted trumpet in a progressively declining scale when choosing a losing door:

wha wha wha whaaaaa

I'm so sorry but that is incorrect. You have not won the all expense paid vacation to the dream of your choice. Please feel free to play again.

Dangit, it is too right! Wait a sec.

Each volume, including covers, is 1-1/4” thick

The worm started chewing at page one of volume one, so skipping the cover, he only chewed through 1-1/8” of volume one.

He chewed through the complete volumes of 2-11 (or 10 volumes) for 1-1/4” x 10 = 12-1/2”

He chewed through the cover and 500 pages of Volume 12, for 1-1/4”

Volume 1 = 1-1/4”
Vol. 2-11 = 12-1/2”
Volume 12 = 1-1/4”

Total is….oh. I missed a ¼” somewhere. 15”

(And I still have two of three volumes of our set!)

sorry, still not right.

I'll give you a hint that might help.

This question was from a MENSA practice test. Realize that part of high iq involves logic and part of logic involves the ability to comprehend spatial relationships.

end of hint

we had a set of about 20 volumes. For the life of me I cannot recall the name though but it was not Britannica.

yes, we have a winner. [off screen narrator] tell them what they won.

As the winner of todays brain teaser, you have won an all expense paid vacation to the dream of your choice (disclaimer: travel expenses, lodging, and meals not included). Imagine snuggling down in your covers and falling asleep and enjoying any dream you can dream. You can dream of a trip to Hawaii or the Fiji Islands or if you are a skier, you can dream of a trip to Veil Colorado, the once time premier destination for skiers who wanted to rub elbows with the stars. Your dream is only limited by your imagination.

I dream of a road trip to a courtroom in New Mexico, wherein a gallery of knowing observers looks on as the judge rules on a petition to modify custody of a certain 7 year old boy...

World Books. The Mom still has the entire set, along with the Yearbooks going up to 76 or so. :p
