I live in WA state and I am representing myself and my Ex has her own lawyer. I know for lawyer they can't talk to the other person and am I limited (or should be) what I am willing to discuss with my Ex versus what I have to talk to her lawyer about. Honestly, I'd like to talk to her lawyer about most everything but legally I want to make sure I don't cross a line.

The general rule is a represented party should be talked to through their representative. Because this is different, do what you want unless the STBX objects.

Not completely true. The ETHICS rule is that an attorney may NOT talk to a represented party but must go through their legal representation. Any party can talk to another party (husband to wife/mother to father) without going through counsel UNLESS there is a restraining order or court order or injunction mandating otherwise.

What would be the result of a represented party who tells the other party to contact her solely through the attorney? When does it become harassing?

It is not harassing. If represented party tells the other party to contact ONLY through the attorney, the represented party is the one paying for that. If it deals with ANY matter of the case -- even tangientally there is no complaint.

I don't think we are communicating.

Say the OP is told by EX, only contact me through my attorney. The OP continues to attempt communication with EX rather than through attorney. Could that be harassment? As I wrote:

I did misunderstand you. Depends on what the communication is about -- is it about the children and their IMMEDIATE needs or is it about long ranging plans. If the ex states do not contact except through attorney, then go through the attorney. I was thinking of it the opposite way. Apologies.

So far my approach has been to contact my Ex about "normal" item such as the kids, payments due to her, etc. What I won't discuss is items of negotiations basically like how long for payments, or for what, etc.
