Releasing Medical Info

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Louisiana

I was adopted a few days after my birth in 1988 when all adoptions were closed. I've looked through several ways to find the last names of my biological parents and think that I may have found a solution.

Would it be possible to the hospital I was born in to release the records of anything they did to be directly after my birth. I know that during the birth my mother would have been considered the patient so they can't release her information. However, if they did anything to me (even a basic checkup) then that would make me the patient and I'm assuming that she would have to sign a document giving them permission.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!

The medical records may not have been retained that long. That's a quarter century - and you never returned as a patient there under that name..

Have you tried adoption registries that help willing birth parents and their children find each other? A quick google of "find biological parents Louisiana" yielded these sites:

I can't say that I truly understand your quest, but I know it is a common one for people who were adopted. It can be a perilous journey. You may want to get some counseling to help you prepare for and deal with what you find (or don't).

I'm not saying it will definitely work, but definitely worth a shot unless someone has a better idea.

The medical records may not have been retained that long. That's a quarter century - and you never returned as a patient there under that name..

I was thinking the same thing but am guessing that they may have a hard copy stored somewhere. I can't find anything reliable stating how long records like that have to be saved.

to make the very hard decision to place you with PARENTS that were better able to give you a better future.

When one of my parents became terminally ill with a tumor in the same reqion in which my other parent had experienced one 25 years earlier, there were no longer medical records available (we wanted to know the EXACT tumor type to determine if it was the same), the hospital did not have them any longer. So my personal experience was that they no longer existed 25 years later.

For me personally, I was born in a hospital and my parents moved out of the state when I was less than 6 months old. I returned back to that same hospital coincidentally 17 years later and they asked me "Do you and your mother still live at XXXX and father still live at XXXXX?" I was confused at first then realized this was the hospital I was born at but the name had changed. So it depends on the hospital.
