What exactly is meant by a "mandatory" sentence? Here in California, the stay in jail after arrest counts for 2 days if it goes past midnight. The rest is satisfied by manual labor in "community service".

Arizona puts DUI offenders in actual physical confinement for 45 days? Really?

What California or Arizona does is entirely immaterial to this thread and I'm not even going to comment.

In NJ, the conviction of the first DUI with high BAC will result in the mandatory minimum sentence which can be substituted for (and almost always is) for the alcohol course mentioned. They will not typically take you into custody long enough to get any "time served" credit.

Yep. For "super extreme DUI" which is over 0.20, it's a 30 day minimum which cannot be waived by the courts. Typically from what I've observed it's 180 days with 150 days suspended, and no more than 150 days can be suspended by a judge. Probation period is a ridiculous 5 years.

If you do an ignition interlock, which is almost a guarantee anyway, you only have to do 14 days minimum, but again that can't be waived.
