My dad had opened up a secondary bank account many many years ago. When he had moved to a different city (same state), he withdrew the money from that account (didn't close it) and simply left the city.

So a few weeks ago he gets a call from a collection agency saying he owes $1500. It turns out that his old bank had a monthly minimum balance requirement that was not met for years. My dad pretty much told them to "**** ***".

This is the first time he had heard of this. The bank never called before sending in the debt.

What would happen if the collectors take my dad to court?

Depends on the collector's standing at the time of filing of the case, what contracts for which they are collecting and what those contracts state. If your father opened the account and signed a contract for such that said there were minimum balance fees, he very well may lose if the collector has standing at the initiation of the case.

How is the bank supposed to find your father if he moved to a different address. You have no clue how your father managed this account and if items paid againt the overdrawn balance. I can tell you with all certainty that the total amount is not totally as a result of monthly maintenance fees - the bank would never let that happen. If the collectors take your father to court, they could very well get a judgment against him.

I don't think you are being told the truth. A much more likely scenario is that the account was overdrawn and he simply walked away from it.
