Unfortunately, there's no way for anyone to know the answers to these questions. The process, and each stage within, can take any amount of time from a few days to several months or more.

It can be very hard to do depending on your personality type, but "just wait and see" is the basic idea. Therefore, in answer to your last question: "A lot of waiting."

The more your stbx-spouse and you can agree on, the faster the process generally goes, and the less likely you will need mediation. Attorneys can also speed up the process, or slow it down considerably with continuances (you only have this one legal matter; they have many, and sometimes get scheduling conflicts).
