I could use some feedback on this one -

Recently my oil pump failed and caused low oil pressure. This resulted in a catastrophic engine failure - thrown rod. Rather than dwell on the cause, I 'm more interested in where to go from here. 133K miles so out of warranty period.

Agreed to install a new engine. Also wanted new oil pump. Estimate $6k.

Chevy dealer has had vehicle for 3+ weeks. Turns out there are no new oil pumps available in the GM part network. NONE. Talked personally to the GM parts rep in Michigan today. None available at any factory. His recommendation - find a good used one.

After agreeing to a new engine, I shouldn't have to accept a used oil pump since this was the cause of the engine failure in the first place. So without a new oil pump I have 6000 lbs of scrap metal and plastic - the vehicle here and the new engine over there....

A 5 year old vehicle with no spare part available?

Has GM failed to uphold their end of an implied contract that they will have spare parts available for a 5 yr old vehicle? It's a Tahoe Hybrid for god's sake, not an experimental one of a kind. By the way, the Tahoe Hybrid is still being manufactured with a 6L V8 engine like the one I have.

Thoughts?

I noticed that you originally added this question to an old 2009 thread you revived. In that old thread you were advised by BL to go to "batauto.com," register, go to the correct forum, and ask your question there.

That was good advice at 8:30 pm yesterday and it is still good advice today.

You can't sue GM or anybody else because that particular part is in such low demand that nobody will make any money making one.

Either get a used pump or enjoy your scrap heap.

What is the basis of this implied warranty?

I haven't been able to find any authority that there is a requirement for an automobile manufacturer to supply spare parts. There are plenty of people who refer to a ten year rule, but nobody has been able to cite an actual law.

If you asked for a new engine and a new oil pump, and the dealer is telling you that you must accept the new engine and a used oil pump, there may be a problem.

I notice the poster hasn't gone there.

Member mechanics ( knowledgeable ones ) actually donate ( not a registration requirement ) and become members .

Giving their free time to advise and reply ,as we do here.

I have registered and sought out advice there myself.

It's more for shade tree repair ,but I'm sure the poster would receive reply(s).

I chased this question in that other thread and again for this one. The only thing I could find is that the manufacturer must ensure parts availablility during the life of the warranty. Since this vehicle is out of warranty, there would be no requirement to make such assurances.

I did find many listings for remanufactured oil pumps at a variety of parts stores. Damn expensive but apparently available.

I gave you a part number from a reputable aftermarket supplier my local GM dealer warranties parts/repairs with. What else do you wish? A new old truck?

Gang, all I wanted was some thoughts on my situation. I appreciate your input.

OHRoadwarrior, I'm checking into your reference. As for a new old truck, no thanks.

After 40 years of driving GM cars and trucks exclusively, that has come to an end because of GM's customer service (or lack thereof) so far. I just bought a brand spanking new 2013 Toyota Highlander Ltd. while I try to get the paperweight fixed. Rental cars are damn expensive too. Hopefully, this did not cause my dad to roll over in his grave today.

Thanks all

Gang, all I wanted was some thoughts on my situation. I got a few of those that were helpful including the part reference (I checked, but it will not work in this application though.)

The rest of you can keep your snooty, arrogant, smart a** comments. If that's your whole purpose for being here, you're not much help.

Sorry I'm not a member of your special club. Like the website title, I can here looking for advice, not ridicule by "superior" beings. Don't worry old buddies I won't be back again.
The door is over there - right next to the refund desk.

Good day.

Thank you for editing your post, channan7, to better reflect the decent advice you received (although I sort of miss in your edited version the part where you call us "superior beings" . . . I was going to use that to try to get FA to give me a raise :D).

Those folks over on BatAuto Forums would have a field day with that .

Hint . Hint , still...

133k is not beyond the realm of reason for an overhaul. I have had cars die before then. I would have bought a used motor then dumped it.

BL, I'm surprised the first post went through. It was a classic case of writing down your thoughts, but then I should have just deleted them. Better late than never. Truthfully I read everyone's posts again after I posted it and realized I over-reacted. Y'all gave me some good information.

I agree with the last post. Since I fully intend to sell the vehicle as soon as they put it back together and get it running, a used oil pump is going to work just fine.

This whole situation has left me a little rough around the edges.

A brand new GM oil pump for your vehicle is available at Ebay for $73.49 including shipping, although I let you find it yourself (hint: it took me 20 seconds, including cutting and pasting your exact model vehicle to find your part).

I saw the oil pump on ebay. I traced it back to the seller and checked there. Looks like it might work but I think they made the assumption the 6L hybrid engine is the same as the 6L engine in the Suburban. It's definitely worth looking into further though.

Thanks for your time spent looking into my issue.
