Parent volunteers and criminal records

I don't know if I'm posting this in the right place but here goes anyway - my son starts school in August, my boyfriend has said how it'll be fun to volunteer/go on fieldtrips, you know just be involved. One of our friends suggested that might be a problem because of his criminal record.
He has four things from when he was 18/19 - driving without license/marijuana/resisting (all one case), disorderly conduct, and minor alcohol possession, and another minor alcohol in another state. All misdemeanors or violations. He's almost 25 now and since our son was born he's just been working and being a dad.
So my question is do schools check out criminal records when parents want to be involved? Or, also, is there any law that requires my boyfriend to tell the school about his past?

Many schools do background checks on potential volunteers. Call the school and ask. You don't have to give your name.

It is likely not a good idea for him to get involved as he may be held culpable if something related were to occur. Further, as he is not a parent, I doubt he would be permitted anyway.

Check with the school's PTO/PTA.

And there ya go again - assuming things. WHat makes you think OP's b/f is not the child's father? Not everyone gets married.

We will ask the school in some way - I would feel a little awkward asking 'anonymously' about standards for volunteers or if they do background checks. Unless we just asked what the process is. He is ok with being upfront when he has to be, he made bad decisions and has grown up. Does anyone have any idea/experience of whether it MAY be a problem from the details I gave? I hope not...

I have actually never heard of a public school doing background checks on parent volunteers. I am not saying that it doesn't happen, but most public schools simply don't have the funds to spend on something like that. They might check any free databases that are available but even that would be time consuming.
