we build a Halloween display in our yard, put a tarp over it and allow people to walk though it to see, The city of Woonsocket, RI has" ordered use to cease and desist the erection of the special Amusement building", we are no longer in the erection part, we are now in the allowing people to view part, does this order mean we can nolonger allow poeple to view it????

Do you have proper permits and zoning to allow people to walk through the building you built on your property for the display. If not, then you need to cease and desist.

Probably not, the OP will have to end up taking it down at some point, say, sometime in early November.
The OP can also end up with fines.

ETA: Or, possibly, criminal action. The city isn't stupid - they're not going to wait around.

Amazing how good we are around here at posting what could happen, and yet can't cite a single instance where something similar has resulted in the dire consequences named.

Translation: Funny how we respond per the law and not based on guesses on what may or may not happen.

And, yes, I certainly DO know of instances where something very similar has happened. But, hey, it's not you that is going to be hurt by your advice, so who cares, right?

Better translation, funny how some of us respond based on the study of law whether formal or informal, and some respond based on the actual practice of law.

Lee -

Bottom line: You are advising the OP that ignoring the C&D issued by the city is a prudent thing to do. Your "advice" can very well be harmful. The reason I didn't report it is that I thought it was tongue in cheek. Continue to advise posters in such a way and I will start reporting. Good day.

Bottom bottom line, it takes quite a bit of nerve for a layman to come on here and tell his better what is or is not an appropriate post. Additionally, please cite the post where I said the OP should ignore the letter. I implied nothing of the sort, that you inferred incorrectly is your problem.

My advice to the OP would be to talk to the people at the city, letting them know, quite reasonably, that he/she is amazed that erecting the "structure" would be something that would require any kind of permit, and promises never to do it again. Any reasonable public servant will tell the OP to go forth and sin no more. If the OP gets one that isn't of the reasonable variety, then the situation certainly changes.
Nice backpedaling. Thank you for correcting your prior advice. Good day.

I corrected nothing but your poor reading comprehension. What I said in my last post has little to do with the law, and everything to do with the practice of law. And unlike you, I gave the OP a practical solution to the problem.

You may now get back to trying to convince the OP that capital punishment is a possible outcome.
Capital punishment is unlikely. But termination of utilities is on the table...
