I became seriously ill and lost my job, I had to file bankruptcy last year, my mortgage was discharged and I didn't reaffirm. After 2 years and hundreds of applications I still can't find work so I'm in foreclosure. On the court papers it says I'm the defendant, along with a collection agency who tried to sue me but was also discharged in the bankruptcy. Why is the collection agency a "defendant" on the papers along with my name?

Because the collection agency has a claim against what is collected apparently.

The foreclosure suits list anybody who might have an interest in the property. This means everyone apparently on the deed as well as anybody with a lien, etc... They need to be informed and given a chance to defend losing their interest in the property.
