After reviewing last nights homework, an additional page dropped out of our 1st grader's folder with another student's name written in another student's handwriting. We asked our 1st grader what that was about, and he stated the following:

"Oh, well I used to do Aiden's work but now the teacher has me do Alfonzo's work when they go to leap."

I am currently trying to find out what exactly "leap" is but I assume it is an acronym for some sort of school program. The children mentioned above are known to have severe behavioral problems and I know one of them personally. I am infuriated that our child would be asked to perform the school work of another student and stunned that I will have to someday explain to him why this sort of thing could get him kicked out of school when a teacher of the school set this precedent. I'm curious if there is any legal action I can reference, or similar situations that I can read about. I am fairly proficient at combing the internet, but I am drawing nothing relevant.

Thanks for any insight in advance. I appreciate the time you've taken to read.

One use of LEAP in a school setting would be this:

Given your statement of behavioral problems, I suspect that may be the proper use

to the rest, I suggest you speak with the teacher seeking an explanation. Our children often have a way of explaining things that are not an valid presentation of the issue. On the other hand, sometimes they are spot on. Before jumping into the deep end on this, I would discuss it without preconceived notions and an open mind. Then figure out if you should be infuriated or not.

Contact the teacher and principal and talk to them (Together) about your concerns.

The first step - which should be fairly obvious - would be to speak with the teacher and find out the "rest of the story". You may - or may not - be getting an accurate description of what is going on from your 1st grader.
