What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? OH

I understand that starting in 2014, everyone who can afford it is required to have health insurance.

My father has $0 income and cannot afford his own health insurance. He lives with me and I pay all of the rent, bills, food, etc. Therefore I plan to claim him as a dependent on my taxes. Does this mean that I would be required to provide him with health insurance as well if I claim him as a dependent?

I have searched and searched for this situation, but I can never find the answer for an adult child taking care of a dependent parent. It is always the other way around...

Thank you in advance for any advice!

You are not required to provide him with health insurance. However if he has no income, he likely will qualify for Medicaid. Has he applied for it yet? That should be his first step. If you have health insurance through your employer, you MAY be able to cover him as a dependent on that insurance if you choose and if the policy allows for dependent parents to be covered.

But doesn't my income, which is above the poverty level, disqualify him for Medicaid? Since it considers your household income?

Yes. Household income is taken into consideration when it comes to health insurance. You may be able to apply through Healthcare.gov and get a subsidy from the government based on two people needing insurance.
